Talent in Teaching Math and Science

25th March 2010

Math and science need clear and simple explanations so that students will succeed in comprehending the concepts. The gifted student will always be able to connect the ideas but less talented students need to struggle more. Moreover, the chronic exposure to bad teaching may have the permanent effect of turning students off to math and science. This is big problem and some math and science teacher need to improve their way of teaching.

It can be poor explanation in class that make children uninterested. Teacher’s explanation often leads confusion. If the pre explanation cannot lead the children way of thinking, it will decrease their interest. The student is not to blame for the confusion here. Instead, the failure is the teachers responsibility. They did not explain things clearly enough or think the problem is easy so student will easily understand. This is totally wrong. The explanation should be in simple sentences. By omitting this simple statement, the problem is impossible to understand, with the result that student interest vanishes, and light turns to dark.

We need to think more carefully about how we explain the intricacies of math and science to students, who incidentally make up a significant proportion of readers at school. Doing it well will open the minds of young people to the beauty of these subjects, but doing it poorly destroys their interest. Like it or not, our future is tied to the intimate exchange of ideas between teacher and student taking place every day in classrooms across the nation. If students dislike math and science, we will not have an adequate supply of mathematicians and scientists, which in turn leads to the inability of our country to maintain a competitive position in the world.
